This "Mapping Expedition" was NOT a mapping expedition..

Admiral Richard E. Byrd was in command of this expedition. Upon his return, he warned of dangers at the North and South Poles. "Flying objects" that could move at incredible speeds.

Then, in what was dubbed the "Geophysical Year," world powers (including the US and USSR) cooperated to "conduct nuclear testing" in the Antarctic.

What is Operation High Jump?

Operation High Jump is a lesser-known case from the post-WWII era. Parts of the story have since been declassified. Today we’ll tell you the story of this classified "research mission" (dozens of ships and over 4000 crew) that went to Antarctica on a "mapping expedition" that ended in a nuclear detonation.

Following Germany's surrender in WWII, a "mapping expedition" to Antarctica was launched. Did they send a few icebreakers, a seaplane tender, or some kind of commercial/scientific research vessel? No. They sent a battlegroup led by a full-sized aircraft carrier.
